Diligent Duty: A Guest Post from Carolyn at Full-On Fit!

I get a good amount of e-mails from people interested in working with me or asking me to share or be a part of something blog related.
Sometimes they are funny, sometimes they're garbage, and sometimes the email makes you stop and think.

Carolyn from Full-On Fit! e-mailed me and I was only too happy to share her information on my blog.
As a (semi)new momma, concerns like this are always weighing on my mind!

Check out what she has to say then head on over to her blog for even more great information!

Diligent Duty In 2013: Fighting Against Type 2 Diabetes in Children

Just a few short months ago, one of my youngest cousins was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It was a complete shock to our family – I knew she was struggling with her weight for some time, but I never thought she could actually develop diabetes from it, especially only at 13 years old! However, after talking to her doctors, we realized there are many families out there in our very same situation. Which is heartbreaking.

According to doctors from Syracuse’s St. Joseph’s Cardiac Hospital, diabetes is a serious disease in itself, but if it’s left untreated, it can lead to even more serious consequences, such as heart disease. Since February is National Heart Month, what better time is there than now to work together as a family towards preventing diabetes and heart disease, and instilling healthy habits? Here are a few tips to consider:

Nutrition Tips
     - Limit your carbohydrates intake
     - Eat foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol
     - Limit foods high in sodium and sugar
     - Replace salty snacks with fresh fruits and veggies (see recipe below)
     - Eat six small meals rather than three large meals each day
     - Get creative with your food – just because you are eating healthier
doesn’t mean you can’t eat some of your favorite foods
            - use whole grain breads and pastas
            - try pureed cauliflower instead of regular mashed potatoes
            - bake or grill your lean meats instead of frying it

Apple Yogurt Delight: A Great Snack for the Kids
1 Apple
2-3 tbs. Low fat or fat free vanilla yogurt
1/8 tsp. Cinnamon
1-2 tbs. Walnuts

Mixing Directions:
Cut the apple into square pieces. Mix with yogurt, cinnamon, and walnuts. Serve and enjoy.

Exercise Tips
     - Go for a brisk walk after dinner as a family – you’ll work off your
meal and get in some more bonding time!
     - Go for a bike ride to and around your local park
     - Break out the jump ropes and have a contest to see who can jump
       the longest without messing up
     - Gather the neighborhood kids and families together to play a game
of soccer, kickball, capture-the-flag, tag, etc.
     - Create as obstacle course or treasure hunt in the backyard
     - Take a nature hike in the nearby woods
     - Take some Yoga or Zumba classes together
